Description

What to expect:

  • Students will create one 12 x 12-inch stained glass-on-glass, non-grouted, indoor mosaic wall hanging. Students will choose from three images provided.
  • Framing possibilities will be discussed, but students will frame their piece at home.
  • Class will begin with a presentation about Solly’s techniques and thought processes for creating mosaics that express realism to a high level with detail and 3-D illusion. However, a two-day workshop is heavy on technique and light on ways of achieving realism.
  • Solly will demonstrate and then provide students with opportunities to practice the fluid double reverse technique before employing it in the creation of their mosaic.

What to bring:

  • All materials but tools will be provided.
  • Students must bring wheeled glass cutters, running plyers, tweezers and safety glasses. (Bringing favorite tools encouraged!)
  • Students at an intermediate or advanced level may choose to bring their own image to mosaic. However, they must bring that image (~11.5 x 11.5 inches).  Stained glass will be available but it is encouraged to bring your own glass for a specific project in case a certain color is not available from the pre-sourced classroom glass.
  • Students responsible for own lunch.

 About Solly

Solly is an artist and educator, based in Ashland, Oregon. With stained glass pieces chaotically arranged, he produces mosaic wall-hangings that portray plants and fire or water in realistic-to-impressionistic landscapes of Western US forests. His techniques were developed in isolation from those used by other mosaicists, and his visual vocabulary was sculpted by biology. Solly has earned major awards in international, mosaic and all-media competitions. He presents at mosaic conferences and offers workshops at home and overseas. His mosaics have been featured in popular press, coffee-table books, trade journals, art magazines and advertisements for art organizations and competitions.  For more on Solly, click here.
